The Petersfield Society Awards

Each year the Society presents the presitious President's Owl and Certificates of Merit to local projects, architectural or environmental, deemed to have has a positive impact on the quality of life in the town and the surrounding areas.
Members nominations are sought and considered by the committee, who announce the winners at the AGM in May.

Launched in 1980, one of the first Certificates of Merit was awarded to Chalton Windmill. This prominent feature of the landscape had been threatened with demolition in the 1950s. Thanks to the Society's efforts it was saved through the awarding of a preservation order by the County Council. It remained in a dilapidated state until it changed hands in the 1970s and the new owners renovated both the building and the sails. It is this conservation that earned them a Certificate of Merit.

2003
In 2003 the President's Owl was awarded to the Petersfield Hospital Garden and Certificates of Merit went to the Buriton Barn Development and the new BP Garage for incorporating solar panels in its sustainable energy design.

2004
In 2004 The Petersfield Society examined a wide range of schemes and decided unanimously that this years nominations did not meet the standard required to receive the prestigious President Owl. A Certificate of Merit was awarded to Derek Wiltshire for his sympathetic design to enlarge the entrance to the Methodist Church Hall improving access and the extension to the kitchen.
